One thing that you’ll notice about Luray, VA is that you’ll feel right at home at any eating establishment. Most of these places are family-owned and humbly located in historic homes. You’d swear that you’re back in your grandma’s kitchen or eating at a dessert parlor in the 1940s. Although from first appearance, the Artisans’ Grill seems to follow suit, this is one local gem that will surprise you.

The Artisans’ Grill, a quaint, casual restaurant from the outside, will sweep you off your feet with its great charm. When you spot it on the street corner, you’ll compare the exterior style to a low-key Irish pub or American grill joint – and in doing so, picture enjoying a juicy burger or beer-battered fish and fries. But from the moment you step through the front door, you’ll be met with the comforts of home cooking and the casual dining experience, refined by a special touch of class and elegance.

I was lucky to find the Artisans’ Grill during my long weekend in Luray. On my first night at the incredible Milton House Inn, our hostess Anita proclaimed this restaurant as one of the three best places to eat in Luray.

As my boyfriend and I entered the Artisans’ Grill for dinner, we were instantly greeted by the strong smells of burgers and steaks that were coming from the grill on the immediate left. I noticed the nostalgic 1950s and 1960s era music just as the two cooks at the hot stove welcomed us. I appreciated their energetic spirit and apparent livelihood. In addition, we found out that the restaurant supports local farmers and proudly displays the works of local and nationally known artists on its walls.

We sat down at a cozy parlor table by the window near the bar and kitchen area. My eyes fell on the little details of the room around me: the romantic, candlelit dining setting at our table; the gentle mauve and white walls with contemporary touches of décor, and the elongated, wooden-framed window next to me, where I could admire the sun disappear behind the horizon. Our waitress was very down-to-earth, laid back, and attentive to us throughout the meal, and she was full of helpful, not pushy recommendations.

While we waited for our meal, I imagined that the bar would be a fun place to grab drinks with friends, or savor a great burger and fries for lunch. I was pleasantly surprised when our main course arrived; the presentation resembled the remarkable work of a culinary artist. The succulent beef tenderloin was perfectly prepared: light and crisp on the outside and tender inside, medium well done, and in a reasonable portion. I was delighted to find that the chef had put a great deal of thought and effort in my dish. The steak was carefully decorated with grilled onions, bacon pieces, and crumbled bleu cheese, and crispy asparagus was arranged in a neat bundle.

I hardly ever pass up on sampling a new restaurant’s chocolate specialties. For years, I’ve built my expertise as a dessert connoisseur by trying everything chocolate, and dazzled my gourmet cooking skills in chocolate cakes, pies, and other desserts. To complete this perfectly delicious meal, I obeyed the waitress’ suggestion to try the double-layered chocolate cake. Expect love upon first bite, especially if you adore chocolate as much as I do, as the cake is very rich like a flawless torte.
