We’ve all been there: your calculus midterm is looming, and you still don’t know a definitive integral from a directional derivative. Or you’re trying to decide what to wear for your job interview, but you just can’t figure out how to tie the whole look together.  And it would be really great if you could find out right this second.

Welcome to LivePerson.com, a platform for on-line advice and professional consulting that provides authoritative answers in real-time. Robert LoCascio, CEO and founder of LivePerson, Inc., started the company in 1995, but the online marketplace launched this past October in an effort to fight back against the alienation of the Internet.

“Before I started LivePerson, I would browse the Web and think, ‘Where are all the people?’” LoCascio says. “That’s what LivePerson is about—humanizing the Web and connecting the 1.3 billion people online in a mutually beneficial relationship.”

The online experts, dubbed “Everyday Einsteins,” can advise you in every field from finding love and feng shui-ing your apartment to installing computer software and avoiding foreclosure. The most popular experts exist in the health/medical, tutoring, and personal advice categories.

“In these tumultuous times, people are looking for reassurance and comfort. Speaking to a LivePerson expert alleviates that anxiety while giving them constructive advice they can use,” LoCascio says.

Conversations take place via live chat, email, or over the phone, and LivePerson promises every client-expert conversation will remain personal and private unless both parties agree to additional distribution. There’s also a Public Board where clients can post a request (anonymously if they wish) and wait for the right expert to find them.

Before you start firing off every question that pops into your head, though, keep in mind that this isn’t your momma’s free advice. The initial communication is free of charge, but after receiving service from a pro, clients will receive an online invoice. If the answer was helpful, clients can confirm payment. If not, they can click “Contest Fee” and ask for clarification.

If the expert never offers satisfactory advice, the client can refuse payment. In the case of live chatting, however, clients receive a free initial communication, but once he or she clicks “Hire Expert,” they start getting billed. Simply clicking “Quit session” will stop the billing time. Or you can send your expert of choice an email and work something out on a more personal level. Consumers rate and review experts on a 5-star scale so you can get an idea of how helpful they will be.

If you’re one of those people who are a lot better at giving advice than receiving it, apply to become an expert—after all, everyone’s a know-it-all about something. Don’t try to fake it, though. LoCascio says about half of the experts that apply don’t make it through the site’s strict system of determining which applicants are the most knowledgeable.

Every day the company helps connect a consumer base of over 100,000 to over 30,000 experts in 300 categories, generating $25 million annually. LoCascio says the site appeals to people because the information you receive is personalized.

“At LivePerson, you get access into the global aspects of the Internet and the ability to find the right expert who will give you personal, one-on-one advice at the best possible price,” he says.

If you’re still hesitant to foot the bill, you could try Google. Just don’t expect your answer to come as quickly. And don’t even think about asking me where to find it. Because what do I look like, some kind of expert?
