Thanksgiving is the time-honored holiday that incites some of the fondest childhood memories (and also some we want to forget).

While many of us will be enjoying a roasted turkey and homemade stuffing in our own homes, over 41 million Americans will travel for Thanksgiving.

Take a glimpse at how other Americans will be celebrating the festive holiday weekend, whether it’s to escape to warmer climates or meet distant friends and family in a dreamier destination.

In Plymouth, MA, you could celebrate the very first Thanksgiving of brotherhood and friendly feasting that happened back in 1620. Plymouth Plantation, which manages to recreate the historic pilgrim village with timber houses, barns, livestock, and even a replica of the Mayflower, is the area’s biggest draw this time of year. You could extend your New England getaway on a day trip to Plymouth’s neighboring travel favorites including Boston and Cape Cod.

Spend the weekend in New York City, where you can kick off Thanksgiving right and bring in the start of the full Christmas season. Take part in the biggest Thanksgiving event in the country at the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in Manhattan. From early morning, the parade marches down Broadway, flashing long lines of colorful floats, marching bands, and giant helium balloons for 2.5 million spectators.

Or you could head up to the Windy City of Chicago, the runner-up in Thanksgiving Day parades. One of the most delicious cities, Chicago has a great diversity of fine dining and nightlife hot spots perfect for the season.

Head to Phoenix, AZ, where you’ll encounter the nation’s grand Native American past through the astounding ruins and reservations that still remain. Phoenix itself is a lively city with a number of things to do; check out the rich collections of Native American art and archaeology in the Heard Museum, or take the quintessential road trip down the legendary Apache Trail, which has beautiful scenery and quaint towns with fascinating stories marked by its tremendous past.

If powder-white snow is what you truly love about this season, make your way to Vail, CO. With over 5,000 acres of ideal terrain for skiing, you can spend your time on the wide stretches of snow and ice covering Vail, a very popular winter resort.

If you’ve been dreaming of a vacation in Switzerland, try the next best option: Banff, Canada. Banff National Park has seemingly endless stretches of untamed, snow-covered lands surrounding Lake Louise. Frequented with moose and other woodland creatures, the area offers outdoor adventure and luxurious accommodations.
