Most DJs have a bad rap (I couldn’t resist the pun). Imagine a DJ wearing a cheap tuxedo, playing “The Chicken Dance” or the “Macarena,” or imagine no one at all because the DJ is sitting in the DJ booth, dropping sick beatz. DJ AM is famous for dating Nicole Ritchie, and Samantha Ronson keeps LiLo clean. But where do they spin?

DJs Paul Rakis and Ray Savoy from Long Island, NY have a very memorable image. They are two of the friendliest guys you’ll ever meet, and they believe in giving back to their community. Above all, Rakis and Savoy want to make sure that their guests are dancing, smiling, and having a great time.

“We get to make people happy and make people dance. It’s fun and rewarding to get out and help people have a good time,” says Rakis. “We interact with so many people and learn about how people party and what people like to do to have a good time. And we make so many new friends.”

Their MySpace page was so highly trafficked that MySpace shut them down. Savoy and Rakis did so much of their initial networking online that they had fifteen to twenty thousand MySpace friends at any given time.

Rakis and Savoy grew up in Nassau County, Long Island. Both are passionate about music and are fans of the New York music scene. Says Rakis, “I like house music, especially in New York City, at places like Webster Hall. Ray is inspired by DJ Tiesto, the number one DJ in the world.”

In 2006, the duo decided that they wanted to start their own business and founded P&R Entertainment. Savoy has ten years of experience DJing for well-established DJ companies and has even performed for the entertainment news program Entertainment Tonight. Though Rakis had little previous experience, Savoy taught him everything he would need to know about being a DJ.

They bought their own equipment and promoted themselves through MySpace and by networking with everyone they knew. Says Rakis, “We give out cards, especially at the charity events. We make announcements. Even when I’m at work or at the bank, I give people my card and tell them I DJ.”

They booked their first event in April 2007, at a house party in Long Beach Island, NJ. They set up their equipment by the beach and were hooked on entertaining ever since. The duo’s favorite event was the 2007 Light the Night Leukemia Walk kick-off party in Staten Island, NY. Says Rakis, “We had 30,000 watts of power, and we were mixing on stage. We DJed for the whole day, and little kids were dancing on the stage.”

P&R Entertainment has built a solid reputation with many local and national charity organizations, schools, and religious groups. Rakis and Savoy’s dedication to their clients and to their clean-cut image really distinguishes them from the thousands of other DJs in the New York metro area.

“We won’t play a song if it has a lot of curse words, because that ruins our image. Our clients aren’t paying us to play songs with dirty, foul language,” says Rakis. “But we always play what the birthday girls wants, no matter what.”
