From all of us at Too Shy to Stop, we wish you a very happy Fourth of July holiday! To celebrate, Peter wrote an essay about “This Land Is Your Land”, a song that many of us learned in elementary school. He would like to remind you that nothing everything we celebrate is as it seems.
Peter writes, “What he considered depressing, vile commercialism made the aging Guthrie retch, and capitalism makes him roll in his grave. Guthrie originally wrote “This Land” in 1940 as a protest song. Disillusioned with the Great Depression and the seemingly apathetic response from the US government and the capitalist enterprises, Guthrie wrote the song as a protest to the powers that be.”
Now that it’s high summer, many young people are looking for summer love. What happens when you date someone who is constantly checking out members of the opposite sex? New writer Eui-jo wanted to explore this phenomenon, and her article offers tips for couples.
“Though humans have evolved into monogamous creatures that don’t need to look around for other mates, ‘checking out’ still happens. ‘Honestly, it’s ridiculous to get upset by something he is genetically programmed to do,’ Samantha von Sperling wrote, in an e-mail. She is the director of Polished Social Image Consultants, an image consulting and dating firm in Manhattan, NY.”
Also, this week Mermaid returned with a new installment.
